I was involved in Christian Surfers in East London and in my Matric year, I heard about the international conference that Christian Surfers Africa was hosting in St. Francis and they graciously sponsored me to go. I was exposed to the broader worldwide ministry and it changed my life and perspective of the organization as a whole.
I had only been a Christian for 2 years and I was stoked to hear that they were running a Leadership program, in Jbay of all places! I decided that I would do the program as soon as I finished school. I, together with Anien, were the first girls (or guinea-pigs) to do the program and it was amazing. My year taught me so much about growing in relationship with God, living in community and also gave me practical training that would help me in all areas of my life. All in all it gave me a great foundation in my walk with Jesus and I loved it so much that I went through the process of volunteering and continuing on staff for the following 2 years.
Before I did the program I already surfed, and I was a Christian, but I’d never put the two together to do any kind of surf ministry. Doing the program, and hanging out with people who had so much experience with Christian Surfers really influenced me a lot. I know that when I return home I’m going to have a lot more involvement in my local surf community.
I found that the program had a great balance of teaching, practical work, and also spare time when I could go and surf. You can feel free to contact me if you want to know more about my experience!
